- Description
- As scholars, we are sociologists and criminologists working in the area of religion, crime, gender, and child abuse. We utilize mapping technology to produce a map of the movements of both clerical perpetrators and Church managers to provide evidence of how the sexual abuse of children was operationalized. While public inquiries have provided significant evidence regarding the ways in which religious organizations protected perpetrators, there has not been much research on HOW this happens, and by which mechanisms. Our research aims to demonstrate the details of this, by drawing up maps via social networking theory and software to design the map. We want to move the conversation about the management of perpetrators forward from knowing that they were assisted to HOW they were assisted in detail. This is not just for one region, but multiple regions and states and across countries. In some organizations, and particularly the Catholic Church, this movement was internationally based. We cross reference this with gender analysis to examine the complexities of child sexual abuse.
